Members of the Geary County Children's Choir recently went to St. Louis as part of a yearly summer trip.

Members of the Geary County Children’s Choir recently had a chance to expand their horizons and perform on a larger stage during a performance trip to St. Louis, Missouri.

According to the choir’s Director Greg Gooden, the group was only able to make this trip due to community support.

The choir was in Missouri from May 30 to June 2 and, according to Gooden, members “had the opportunity to travel on a nice Village Tours coach, stay at a lovely hotel, eat at delicious restaurants, tour historical sights, and share musical performances.”

He described the group as “musical ambassadors of Geary County.”

In total, the trip cost almost $30,000, which included 22 choir members, seven adult sponsors, Gooden, and the choir’s assistant director.

The group had many community sponsors who provided financial help through fundraisers and donations. Sponsors also provided items such as matching t-shirts for each day of the trip.

“The choir children and their parents gave money and volunteered a lot of time and energy to make this happen,” according to Gooden. “We had a wonderful fundraising committee of choir parents who met weekly to make this happen. Once again, the support from the Geary County community was amazing.”

During the course of the trip, Gooden said, the group had many cultural experiences.

“The children were able to visit the City Museum, Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, St. Louis Zoo, Old Courthouse, St. Louis Gateway Arch, Six Flags Amusement Park, Missouri Veteran’s Home,” he said. “They had special meals at BB Jazz Blues and Soup, Tin Roof, and Dave & Busters. Performances included Six Flags, Tin Roof Restaurant, Cathedral Basilica, and Missouri Veteran’s Home. The choir represented the community well. They received many compliments from those who saw their performances and from our tour guide. The most inspirational performance was at the Missouri Veteran’s Home. They spent a lot of time visiting with the residents before the concert. It was heartwarming to see our children interacting with these veterans.”

Sept. 9, the choir will begin its 13th season. Starting at 6 and running until 7:30 p.m., the first rehearsal/parent meeting of the season will take place at the Junction City Church of the Nazarene.

Brochures will be available at school buildings within Unified School District 475. The choir is made up of children in fourth through eighth grade who audition or who are recommended by their music teachers.

Auditions for the choir will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Junction City Church of the Nazarene.

“We look forward to sharing our music in the community again this year,” Gooden said. “Thanks again for your support in making our St. Louis Performance Tour a reality.”
