The "shop local" sign in the window of Garden Gate Antiques on Washington Street invites people to look for gifts among Junction City's local businesses this holiday season.

The holiday season is upon us and with it comes the usual flurry of activity from local businesses — sales, decorations and special events.

Some of this year’s festivities come hand-in-hand with Shop Small — the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce’s week-long celebration of local enterprise leading up to Small Business Saturday.

Garden Gate Antiques, one of the participants in Shop Small, has decided to go above and beyond by holding an Old-Fashioned Christmas Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. It takes place in downtown Junction City and everyone is invited.

Though owner Jan Gray is organizing the event, several other merchants plan to offer sales and refreshments throughout that time.

“We have lots of special things planned for that day,” Gray said. “I hope everyone comes out, enjoys it and has a good time.”

These things include free carriage rides on Munson’s horse-drawn trolley from 1 to 4 p.m., starting and ending at Ninth and Washington streets, and wandering groups of carolers to serenade shoppers throughout the day.

Santa is flying down from the North Pole, courtesy of the Geary County Historical Society, and he’ll be available for photos from 1 to 4 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. Pictures with Santa cost $10.

Gray hopes this can show off some of Junction City’s assets.

“We do have a historic downtown, it’s a gorgeous downtown, and we need to capitalize on that,” she said. “We need to get people down here into the shops and see what we have to offer.”

There’s no question in her mind projects such as this can help boost the local economy.

“Small Business Saturday is always a good Saturday for me,” she said.

Gray is still looking for carolers. If you’re interested or if you have a small group who could use this kind of exposure, call her at  (785) 238-4380 and she’ll set up a time for you to stroll down Washington Street and sing.
