On Wednesday morning, the Big 12 Conference released its picks for the preseason All-Big 12 team. Four K-State players made the team, which is chosen by members of the media.
Junior fullback Winston Dimel, junior offensive lineman Dalton Risner, junior defensive back D.J. Reed, and sophomore defensive end Reggie Walker were the Wildcats selected to the team. The four selections give K-State the third-most players on the list behind Texas (5) and Oklahoma (5). This is Dimel’s second-straight appearance on the preseason All-Big 12 list, while the three others are first-time honorees.
Dimel, Risner and Reed were each named 2016 First Team All-Big 12, while Walker was named Defensive Freshman of the Year. The four helped lead K-State to a 9-4 record last season.
Dimel has started in 26 career games and has 18 rushing touchdowns. He is five rushing touchdowns away from entering K-State’s top-10 list. In 2016, he rushed for 12 touchdowns, tied for third in the Big 12.
Reed was the 2016 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year after ranking fifth nationally and tying for third in school history with 19 passes defensed. He led the Big 12 in that category last season. Reed is a member of the 2017 Bednarik Award watch list, which is awarded to the best defensive player in a particular season. Reed also tied for second on the team with 75 tackles and grabbed three interceptions in 2016.
Risner started 13 games at right tackle in 2016 after starting every game at center in 2015. He and Dimel helped K-State set the school record for rushing yards per carry (5.27) and ranked in the top 10 in three other categories.
Walker totaled 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks last season. For his efforts, he earned Freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America. He finished seventh in the Big 12 in sacks and eighth in tackles for loss. He led all Big 12 freshman in those categories, and ranked fourth nationally among freshmen in sacks.
Some other notable players that were honored on Wednesday’s Preseason All-Big 12 list were Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and West Virginia quarterback Will Grier, who was named Preseason Newcomer of the Year. Kansas defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr. was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to being a unanimous selection on the All-Big 12 Defensive team.
