JCHS track 2017

Junction City's Keiana Newman celebrates after her victory in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2017 KSHSAA State Track Meet in Wichita. Newman will be looking to defend her state championship in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdle races.

WICHITA — Cessna Stadium in Wichita will be filled with hundreds of

high school athletes from throughout the state, all of which have the

same goal: win a state championship.

Among them are several Junction City High School athletes, each with

their eyes set on being the best in their respective race.

State track begins Friday, and those who are making the trek to

compete this weekend are seniors Xavier Cason, Ayi-Lissa Dotson,

Leslie Etheridge, Izayiah Moore, Jamarcus Plato, Antonio Porter,

Hannah Reynolds, Alissa Sanchez and Ian Sanchez, juniors Sherriontea

Jones, Keiana Newman, Tiara Smith and Juan Tovar, and sophomores

Savanah Adams and Nyla Blagrove. Additionally, members of the girls’

4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams, and the boys’ 4x100 and 4x400

relay teams, will be participating in state.

Leading the way

Individually, the Blue Jays will be led by several upperclassmen who

qualified in more than one event. Plato qualified for both the

110-meter and 300-meter hurdles; Reynolds qualified for discus throw

and shot put; Ian Sanchez qualified for the 100-meter and 200-meter

dash; and Newman qualified for both the 100-meter and 300-meter

hurdles.

Also participating in running events will be Etheridge; Moore; Alissa

Sanchez; Smith and Tovar.  Adams, Blasgrove, Cason, Dotson, Jones and

Porter will be participating in field events.

For some, this will not be their first appearance at the state track

meet. Last year, Adams, Dotson, Newman, Reynolds, Alissa Sanchez and

Smith all participated in the state track meet, highlighted by Newman

taking first in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Additionally, the

girls’ squad took home the team championship in the state track meet.

Planning to go

Events for this weekend’s track meet are staggered throughout Friday

and Saturday. A complete schedule of all events is located on the

Heartland Timing website (www.heartlandtiming.com) and the KSHSAA

website (www.kshsaa.org); times for those events JCHS athletes are

participating in are located on this page. However, KSHSAA advises

people that if meet sessions run ahead of schedule, it will continue

to run ahead and no adjustments will be made.

For Friday’s track events, times listed are for when the 4A, 5A and 6A

runners will participate. Class 4A will compete first, followed by 5A

and 6A. For Saturday’s track events, the times listed are for all 6

classes. The competing order will begin with 1A and continue

sequentially through 6A.

All listed field events are for 6A only.

Team award presentations will be conducted following the last race on Saturday.
