JC's Westerhaus to play in state tennis tourney

JC's Kody Westerhaus will play in the state tennis tournament this weekend.

Junction City’s Kody Westerhaus is heading to the state tennis tournament.

After taking down Wichita Southeast’s Tim Nguyen in the first round in two sets, then falling in straight sets to Mason Thieu from Washburn Rural in the regional tennis tournament in Topeka Friday, Westerhaus had one more opportunity to punch his ticket to state. With his back against the wall, Westerhaus faced off against Seenu Madhaven from Wichita East, and won 6-2, 6-3. He was then victorious in the fifth-place match when he beat Washburn Rural’s Jacek Holroyd 6-0, 6-3 to finish the day with a 3-1 record and a trip to state.

The doubles team of Mason Richards and Nolan Rothfuss won their first round matchup, but lost the next two to finish 1-2 on the day.

The 6A State Tennis Tournament will be held May 10-11 in Olathe at the College Boulevard Activity Center.
